Studios & Internships

Community-Building Design Studios

Community-Building studios teach the design of both affordable and market-rate housing using different forms of construction, with special emphasis on modular building technology. Classes and projects address sustainable development with respect to architecture and urban design, especially focusing on regional and local characteristics of architecture and design in rural, urban, and suburban communities across the country.

Our studios challenge students to confront the reality of designing and building affordable and sustainable housing. We believe that participating in community enhancements equips students for lives of continuing service to citizens and communities typically underserved by the architecture profession. In CBC studios, students visit communities, listen to community members’ concerns, work in design teams on particular sites, and make interim and final presentations to clients and critics.

Internships

CBC internships are available periodically to upper-level undergraduate students currently enrolled in the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame. Students at other schools are NOT eligible.

These internships will include basic training in design development, construction document preparation, and hands-on design and construction — with a focus on modular, affordable, and sustainable housing, and on other sustainable architectural, urban, and landscape features.

During the ten- to twelve-week research internship, student interns will conduct hands-on research in design development, construction document preparation, and building implementation under the supervision of CBC Directors, Fellows, and associated faculty members.
